Understanding Particulate Matter (PM2.5)

Particulate Matter, commonly referred to as PM2.5, consists of airborne particles smaller than 2.5 micrometers in diameter. These particles are composed of various chemical substances, and the reactions that produce them can be highly complex. In Taiwan, particulate pollutants are a significant contributor to poor air quality, posing health risks as they can enter the body through the respiratory system.

Regulatory Developments

The Environmental Protection Administration has progressively tightened standards for stationary pollution sources, fuel sulfur content, vehicle emissions, and fuel composition. On May 14, 2012, revised Air Quality Standards were introduced, incorporating PM2.5 limits and prioritizing health impacts based on local research.
